Eagle Wrestlers Finish 2-4 in Home Multi Meet

The Salt River High School wrestling team played host to a multi-meet against Hopi, Pinon, Santa Cruz, Valley Christian and Joy Christian High Schools on January 22. The Eagles competed in the second round of the multi and Jesus Salazar was the first to wrestle in the 112-pound weight class.

Salazar was unable to score in the first period, competing for the majority of the time on his feet and locked up with his opponent Otivia Puhuhefuay. However, Puhuhefuaya pinned Salazar with 1:35 left in the second period.

Salt River had to forfeit in the 130- and 135-pound weight classes. Aaron Rivers challenged Zachary Youvella in the 145-pound division and lost in a technical fall 15-0. Head coach Marc Hillis was encouraging Rivers to get back to his base during the match. Blaine Hillis wrestled in the 152-pound weight class and pinned Albert Korah with 1.8 seconds left in the match. Blaine was ahead 7-0 at the end of the first period and added two more in the second. Marc was reminding Blaine to get chest-to-chest while on the floor to earn his pin. Blaine was ahead 12-0 before he pinned Korah.

Taneasha Thomas wrestled in the 160-pound weight class against Michael Tenakhongva and was pinned at 1:13 into the match. Hosteen Begay-Smith wrestled in 189-pound division and after going ahead 2-0, Begay-Smith pinned Lawrence Toshongeva at 1:08. Twenty-seven seconds into the match, Lloyd Lewis pinned Joseph Whittington. Monty Benally had a fight on his hands. At the end of the first period he was ahead 6-4. Then a late reverse gave him another two-point advantage 8-6 at the end of the second period. In the third period with 18.6 seconds left in the match and pinned Dion Sahneyah. Salt River defeated Hopi High School 30-29.

The Eagles were defeated by Joy Christian High School 40-30. Salazar was pinned by Marcos Rodriguez and Salt River had to forfeit the 125-, 130-, 135-, and the 140-pound weight classes. Rivers pinned Tyler Webb and Blaine Hillis was declared the winner by forfeit. Thomas lost 11-1 to Matt Savage. Begay-Smith pinned Isaiah Herrera and Lewis also pinned Billy Nguyen. Benally was awarded the win by forfeit.

Salt River lost to Valley Christian High School 36-30. Blaine Hillis won his next match pinning Jake Feenstra. Thomas was awarded a win by forfeit. Begay-Smith pinned Mitchell Lenke and Benally was also awarded a win by forfeit.
The Eagles beat Santa Cruz Valley Union 30-22 and also lost to Pinon High School 48-18. Begay-Smith pinned Scott Tohe in the 189-pound weight class.

Lewis also pinned his opponent Brandon Tsosie in the 215-pound weight class.

Benally finished the match pin and a win over Garren Wheeler
