To end the Salt River High School fall sports season, the athletics department hosted its annual Fall Athletics Banquet for school athletes on November 17. The evening started off with a catered dinner from Famous Dave’s BBQ, and then everyone headed into the high school auditorium for the awards presentation.
Athletic Director Shawn Lytle welcomed the students and their families to the presentation, which celebrated the youth who do outstanding work in representing the school. One at a time, the coaches and their teams walked on the stage to receive certificates and awards. Lynn Ann Yazzie, the junior high volleyball coach, was first. She called up her team and talked about how it was different going from coaching high school to junior high volleyball and how the girls finished their season 5-5. The girls received awards and recognition, acknowledging how they just missed going to state by a hair.
“I had a fun year coaching the junior high football team this year,” said Junior High Football Head Coach Alvin Saenz. He continued by offering positive words about the players and their performances as they walked on stage. This team was also the first junior high team to start and finish the season with more than 20 players.
For the high school football team, coach Shawn Lytle said this was also the first time from start and finish the season had 30 players, with one being a senior.
“Next year there will be 29 returning players on the Eagles football team,” said Lytle. “We improved so much with each game as players got better and worked harder each time. We have a bright future coming up.”
As the teams were on stage, some of the players also received awards for Most Valuable Player, Highest GPA and Most Inspiring Player.
