On a cloudy Monday afternoon on March 21 at Scottsdale Stadium, as the San Francisco Giants were getting ready to play against the Colorado Rockies in a spring training game, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Council Member Leonard Rivers was getting ready to throw out the first pitch. As the crowd filled the stands, Rivers said how excited he was.
“I would never pass up the opportunity to pitch at any game; I have done it several times and always enjoy it,” he said. He said he has been “doing well” with his pitching, and had been pitching in recreation league games recently.
Rivers threw out the first pitch to San Francisco Giants left fielder Pat Burrell, who then signed the ball and gave it back Rivers. Shortly afterward, the clouds finally opened up and the stadium announced a rain delay.
