Eagles Football Falls in First Home Game

During the season-opening football game played against the Tanque Verde Hawks on August 27 at Salt River High School, the Salt River Eagles varsity team’s offense came alive near the end of the first quarter. Running back Robert Norris took the handoff from quarterback Luis Lopez and rushed nearly 50 yards for their first touchdown of the game, and the Eagles trailed 14-6. With 22.1 seconds left to play in the first half, the Hawks headed into the locker room up 17-6.

 

Thomas Travels “Down Under” to Play Football

The only girl on Salt River High School’s football team, defensive tackle Taneasha Thomas, had the opportunity to play in the International Sports Specialists, Inc. (ISSI) Down Under Bowl, held July 10–17 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It took a nomination letter from a coach to get her selected and then some school fundraising, a $3,000 donation from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and a summer job at the SRPMIC Early Childhood Education Center to get Thomas on the plane to Australia.

 

Men’s Southwest Baseball Tournament Crowns Champions

­­­The Guadalupe Yaquis and Guadalupe Marlins battled it out in the loser’s bracket to try to advance to the championship game of the Men’s Southwest Baseball Tournament, held August 2 to 7 at the Salt River Ballfields. The Marlins were defeated, finishing in third place, and the Yaquis moved on to challenge the Phoenix Firebirds for the title.

 

Super Kids Pool Party

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Recreation Department held its Super Kids Pool Party at the Lehi Aquatic Center on August 14. The afternoon weather was hot and humid, making it a perfect time to have a pool party at Lehi Pool. Recreation staff members served hamburgers and hot dogs to the Super Kids families, and that was followed by pool play for the special-needs children in the spray area and in the lap pool with their parents.
