The Salt River Police Department (SRPD) would like to introduce eight new employees recently hired to serve the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
We would first like to welcome and introduce two criminal investigations support technicians, Avis Mireles and Paula Alvarez. Both started with the SRPD on March 22 and are assigned to the General Investigations Division, which is located at the Chaparral Business Park. Both bring extensive knowledge to their current assignment within the SRPD, and we are very proud to have two more Community members on board with our team.
Next, we would like to welcome and introduce six police officer recruits who were hired under the CHRP (COPS Hiring Recovery Program) grant: Jose Quintero (SRPMIC Community member), Frank Canez, Derek Benally, Jose Montenegro, Robert Kuna and Michael Derfus. These six recruits started with the police department on March 1 and successfully completed our in-house SRPD four-week pre-academy. The SRPD pre-academy is a structured training curriculum facilitated by our SRPD Professional Standards Bureau. Our numerous AZPOST-certified instructors deliver instruction ranging from communication skills, physical training and understanding the Community’s rich culture to the numerous ordinances and laws they will be enforcing to keep our Community a safe place for all.
The SRPD pre-academy has proven to be a successful model to best prepare our police officer recruits for the intensive 18-week Arizona Law Enforcement Academy (ALEA) Police Academy. The recruits are currently attending this rigorous program (in Phoenix), where they will continue to be tested, evaluated and observed to ensure that as new police officers they are able to best serve the needs of our Community. The graduation date for the recruits is July 30. Upon graduation from the ALEA Police Academy, these new officers will attend a one week in-house SRPD post-academy. Then they will be placed into our in-house SRPD Field Training Officer (FTO) Program, where they will ride with experienced veteran police officers for 16 weeks of additional training and instruction. While on FTO, the new police officers will be evaluated and observed daily to ensure they meet our high standards, performance measurements and policies so they may serve and protect our Community to the best of their ability.
