Seniors Have Fun, Learn Important Information at AICOA Conference

Seniors from many Indian communities around Arizona registered for the 22nd annual Arizona Indian Council on Aging Conference, held April 19–22 at the Radisson Fort McDowell Resort and Casino. The theme of this year’s conference was “Our Elders: Living Treasures.” The theme encompasses AICOA’s goal of advocating for the American Indian senior community.

At 18 years old and 5 feet 5 inches tall, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community member Monique “Mo” Newton sits shyly and fidgets as she plays with her iPod. As the daughter of Ana Fulwilder and James Newton, you would have never guessed that Newton was famous, as her late grandmother Eula Goodwin had predicted she would be, or, like her cousin Chuvak Montiel says, “Rez famous.”

 

Al’s Baseliners, NDN Hoops Win 175 Classic Basketball Tournament

Al’s Baseliners took the championship in the men’s division of the 175 Classic Basketball Tournament on April 10. They played against the United Mine Workers Association (UMWA). In this basketball league, the teams are composed of players ages 35 and older.

 

A Day Filled With Baseball Drills

On a cool Saturday morning on April 17, parents brought their 3-5 year olds to the Recreation's Little Ballerz program held outside on the Community Pop Warner field. There they would learn the basics of baseball to help them for the upcoming t-ball season.
