New Spring Training Facility Name, Logo and Web Site Unveiled

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and its partners, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies, announced on Friday, June 4 that their new spring training facility will be called Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. The new complex is located at 7555 N. Pima Road, and it is the first Major League Baseball spring training facility built on Indian land.

Each year the University of Arizona hosts a summer Wellness Camp for Children with Diabetes, for kids with type 2 diabetes or who are at risk of being diagnosed with the disease. Diabetes is widespread and very debilitating in the Native American population.

At age 30, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community member Richard Bluecloud Castaneda felt the need for a drastic change in his life. “It wasn’t necessarily a midlife crisis or anything,” said Castaneda jokingly. He was mainly unhappy with his career at that time, the year 2000. Although he had a good-paying job in the hospitality industry, he was working for the money and not happiness.
