EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson Tours Community

The administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Lisa P. Jackson, made a visit to Arizona on January 7 to present a $200,000 grant to the Inter-Tribal Council of Arizona to fund childhood lead poisoning prevention campaigns for 20 Indian tribes in Arizona. While she was in the Valley, Jackson toured the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community’s new Two Waters complex and other locations in the Community.

Employee Service Luncheon Recognition

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community held its annual Service Award Recognition Luncheon at the Community Building on January 12. Employees who have worked for the Community for a period of five, 10, 20 or 30 years were recognized for their years of service. Community Manager Bryan Meyers, who served as master of ceremonies, welcomed all the employees to the luncheon.

 

Students Make Their Voices Heard During Winter Youth Gathering

During the winter break from school December 28-30, close to 100 youth participated in the Salt River Winter Youth Gathering, hosted by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community’s Youth Advisory Council. The event was a chance for the youth to learn new things and meet new people. The gathering was divided into two age categories: students ages 8 to 12, and 13 to 17.


 

Making Her Mark on Film: Shashani Marcus

Salt River Pima-Maricopa Community member Shashani Marcus, age 26, has already started making her mark in the world. A veteran of the American Indian Film Institute’s (AIFI) Tribal Touring Program, which travels to Indian reservations to teach teens the skills involved in writing and producing their own short films, Marcus has earned a bachelor’s degree in filmmaking and television cinematography from the Academy of Arts University in San Francisco, and now works for the AIFI in an administrative position.
