More than 30,000 runners from all over the world came to the Valley of the Sun to participate in the P.F. Chang’s Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon and Half Marathon on Sunday, January 17. The event was held in the cities of Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe. The event has taken place in Phoenix for six years, and the flat course and good weather attract runners and walkers of every kind to participate.

About 30 members and employees of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community took part in the marathon, representing the Community by wearing jerseys with the official SRPMIC seal.

Erica Harvier didn’t think she would be running in the Half Marathon this year, until her son Israel asked if he could participate. Israel was inspired after running in the Community’s half marathon in October. Mother and son completed the P.F. Chang’s Half Marathon together, finishing in less than three hours. “I would not have done it if it wasn’t for my son asking me to enroll us both,” said Harvier.

The honorary starters for the P.F. Chang’s race this year were Arizona Senator John McCain and Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon. Both cheered “Go!” throughout the morning as each “corral” of runners was released.
