Supercross Team San Manuel stopped by the Lehi Branch of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale on January 15 to share tips for good health and success with the kids. The San Manuel team includes professional Supercross riders Josh Hill, the 2008 American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Supercross Rookie of the Year, and 2009 reigning Supercross champion James Stewart.

The team was here for the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series event held at Chase Field in Phoenix. Team San Manuel will be competing in 17 cities throughout the series, and during each stop the riders will be speaking to groups of children about competing in Supercross races and what it takes to be a champion. This outreach effort is thanks to a partnership between the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and L&M Racing, LLC, with the sole purpose of reaching out to Native and non-Native communities and sharing with them the value of perseverance and dedication.

“Today we came out to the Boys & Girls Club to give them positive advice on getting an education, eating healthy and what it takes to be a dirt bike champion,” said Stewart. “This is my second year with San Manuel and also to visit Phoenix. We came to hang out with the children and are happy to see that they are interested in this sport.”

Stewart said that Team San Manuel has given him many opportunities that he would otherwise not have had, like talking to the kids and seeing them get excited when he signed posters for them. He said it was inspiring.

During the visit, the children asked the Supercross riders various questions, such as how fast they ride and if they can do tricks. Hill and Stewart took turns answering the questions. The children also wanted to know how it feels to be a dirt bike racer, and both Hill and Stewart said it feels “cool” because they get to travel across the country. They also talked about the importance of wearing protective gear when riding.

The team had just traveled over from Anaheim, California, where Stewart competed in the Monster Energy AMA Supercross there and won his first race for 2010. Stewart is nicknamed “the fastest man on the planet” in Supercross.

“We visited Phoenix at the same time last year, and I was in a different position [in the rankings] and I didn’t know what to expect,” said Stewart. “With Josh Hill coming on to the team, I feel like a mentor and I can tell him what’s going on.

Last year, I won the AMA Supercross championship and this year I will be leading it.”

Hill finished third in the Phoenix race, while unfortunately Stewart finished 15th.
