Children in their Wrangler jeans and cowboy boots got up early on Saturday, March 27 to participate in the Salt River Aal-Tash Fun Day Rodeo at the Ropers Arena, off McDowell Road and the Loop 202. This year’s rodeo was dedicated to the memory of Emmett King.

Youth of different ages kept running up to the corrals that held the sheep used in the rodeo’s most popular event for little ones, the woolley ride for children and infants ages 0 to 5. In this “Special Division,” the other events were dummy roping and broomstick barrels.

Next came the calf riding competition and other events in the Pee Wee Division, for kids ages 6 to 9. That was followed by events in the Junior (10 to 14) and Senior (15 to 17) divisions, highlighted by steer riding. Both boys and girls took on the task of jumping onto the steer and doing their best to hold on for eight seconds, but the steers would win, bucking off the majority of the riders. Some of the contestants barely made it out of the chute before hitting the dirt, but they did put on a good show for the crowd.

Team roping, breakaway, flag racing, pole bending and barrel racing were the other competitions for the older children and teens. To make it more complex, these events were all timed for speed and accuracy.

“This year’s Aal-Tash Fun Day Rodeo had a great turnout and ran very smoothly and in a timely manner,” said Angie Silversmith, rodeo organizer. This year there were about 60 participants.

The rodeo was dedicated to the late Emmett King, who passed away last year. King was a popular cowboy from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community who attended this rodeo every year to give the kids a helping hand. “King’s family came out to support the event. It was a great feeling to have them come out and volunteer to help where they could,” said Silversmith.

Silversmith said Emmett was one of the original Salt River Rodeo Committee members in 1990, when the Aal-Tash Fun Day Rodeo began, and he was one of the biggest supporters of the rodeo, Silversmith said. She announced that there would be an upcoming roping event and barbecue in memory of King.
