The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Recreation Department hosted the 2010 High School Basketball Tournament March 11–13. According to Marla James, recreation coordinator II, the Recreation Department has been hosting this tournament for about 15 years.

“It is an open tournament; it’s not only for Native Americans,” said James. “We get teams from all over the place and it’s always a good turnout.”

This year 10 boys teams and eight girls teams from across the Valley played in the tournament. Winning the championship in the boys division was Zona and on the girls side the Renegades II.

Two-time tournament champions Zona swept through their games this year, winning all the way. For the championship, they played against the Glasshouse team. Zona started slowly in the first quarter, but kept a good lead after the second quarter. By the second half Zona was ahead by 4 points, with the score at 21-17. Zona kept up their pace against Glasshouse’s run-and-gun style, eventually winning the championship game 40-29.

“It’s an honor being invited [to this tournament]. We like coming out here; there is good competition, said Zona Coach Sal Garcia after the game. “We have a lot of respect for the teams we play, especially the one we played here today.”

Prior to the boys championship game, the Renegades II took the girls championship. The Renegades kept up a 5-point lead throughout most of their game against Ak-Chin. In the fourth quarter, the girls stepped up their defense and won the game 14-31.

Renegades II player Mikki Ramirez was happy about the win.

“We wanted to win the championship game, but after our first loss this morning against Ak-Chin we were kind of doubtful. But it feels good to win,” said Ramirez.

Renegades II Coach Robert Ramirez said, “I knew they would make it this far. We have many seniors on the team, and a lot of them are from the Salt River High School State Championship team. It was a great game.”
