The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) Council asked for a Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Secretarial Election to amend the SRPMIC Constitution. This amendment would remove the BIA from any future amendment processes to the SRPMIC Constitution; and change the amount of signatures required on a petition to amend the SRPMIC Constitution to 15% of the eligible voters.
The week of January 16, 2018, the BIA will send election notices and registration packets to all SRPMIC enrolled members who are eligible voters. Unlike a regular election, this is a BIA Secretarial Election, and you must register by mail to be allowed to vote in this election. Also, this entire election process will only be done by mail. There will be no election polling site on “election day”, which is Friday, March 16, 2018.
It is important that you keep a close watch for the Election notices from the BIA starting the week of January 16th, 2018. Please fill out the registration information and then mail it in to the BIA in the self-addressed envelope that will be provided by the BIA. Per the BIA rules, all registration forms will only be accepted if mailed in and received by February 14, 2018 at 4:30 P.M.
If you have questions about the upcoming BIA Secretarial Election, the best place to call is the BIA’s Salt River Agency at (480) 421-0807 or Erica Harvier, Council Secretary at (480) 362-7466.
